6 reasons you should have a website

If you *don’t* have a website, you’re probably marketing yourself on social media (or via sign-spinning, which — awesome).

But, in the least pressure way, I’m going to tell you that you’re missing out on major benefits of having your own website.

A website takes your business from DIY to professional (even if you’re still DIYing it!).

It establishes credibility, authority, and presence. When I speak to new business owners, I *highly* recommend that they prioritize their website as soon as their time and/or budget allows. This first benefit justifies why.

A website establishes credibility

In the olden days, it was a billboard.

Then it was a newspaper ad.

Then it was it your mom reposting on Facebook.

To establish credibility now: it’s a website.

Humanity knows how to navigate the web and expects to find a website. When they don’t find one, they are very likely to move onto the next service provider who does.

Websites signal authority. We’re trained to think this way. Real, established, legitimate companies have websites. Thus, if you have a website, anyone who sees it will assume you are real, established, and legitimate.

A website sells while you’re sleeping

Important: this is NOT synonymous with “passive income” or “unicorns.” (Neither exist.)

((Actually, I’m unsure on that second one.))

You have a life, remember? That means you don’t want to be on Instagram every waking hour of every day. When would you ever eat a meal, watch a good movie, or poop?!

Think of a website as a physical store.

Let’s say you’re wicked good with cakes and you just opened up a new bakery. When you’re there and open — people know what you do. When it’s time to close (so you can go home and poop), you don’t take down the sign, do you? No, you leave it up so that everyone who walks by (while you’re home pooping) knows what you do.

Your website is always alive and well — even when you’re not.

A website gives you an additional marketing channel

Hello, SEO!

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It’s just a set of practices that make Google more likely to recommend you when someone searches something. Over time, SEO can be incredibly impactful. (I particularly love it because it’s more dependable and predictable than any social media platform I’ve ever come across.)

Having a website — and more specifically, blogging regularly on that website — is how you leverage SEO and get more eyeballs on your business.

You own your website

(you don’t own your Instagram page)

As of this publication, I have not had the lovely experience of being banned by Meta. But I know people who have and DEAR GOD.

At best, it’s a migraine.

At worst, it wrecks your income potential.

Meta is finicky (as are all social media platforms). They can take your account away for no reason. If your business exists solely there, you’ll lose the ability to market, sell, and grow. It’s too much of a gamble to take.

Your website is different. You OWN it. (I mean, you pay for the pleasure of owning it, but still …)  Barring the end of the world (or you forgetting to pay your annual domain fee — same thing), your website will never go dark. And that’s reassurance worth paying for.

A website answers common questions from your hottest leads

Hot leads move quickly. When someone knows what they need, they want it fast (this is literally why Amazon has taken over our lives). As a service provider, you want to respond fast. But you can’t be on social media 24/7, so any hot lead that comes your way may fizzle as they have to wait.

A website keeps your hot leads HOT.

Let’s say you’re reading this blog (which you are) and you know you need a website (thanks to this blog). You’re like, “I think I want a website copywriter. Kelsey’s one of those. I’d like to work with her. But, wait, how much does she cost?”

Now, two scenarios could happen …

If I don’t have a website:

  • You think about messaging me on IG to ask.

  • You don’t really want to, but whatever, maybe I’ll answer quickly.

  • You send a DM.

  • I wake up that morning hungover and don’t answer you for 6 hours.

  • By the time you hear from me, you’ve already found another copywriter you love who had her prices on her website.

If I have a website:

Your website answers questions and addresses objections so your leads can make fast decisions (without having to reach out to you first).

A website makes you feel cool

Alright, I can’t back this up with anything other than my own vibing (and the vibes of my clients) after your website is up and running, but … trust me on it.

Having a kick-ass website gives you:

✔️ a place to *confidently* send your soon-to-be clients

✔️ something to appease the SEO gods

✔️ a lil je ne ce quoi that you’re kinda the shit

✔️ honestly? relief that you have one

I’m a website copywriter so I’m totally biased, but you should trust my unbiased opinion that you probably need a website.
