When Is It Time To Hire A Copywriter?

If you have a website, or want a website, you have two main options:

  1. write it yourself.

  2. hire a copywriter.

One is cheap, one is expensive. And there are lots of pros and cons to each.

In this blog, I’m going to tell you 5 signs that it might be time to hire a hot copywriter.

⚠️⚠️⚠️ FIRST THINGS FIRST ⚠️⚠️⚠️

Only hire a copywriter if you can afford it.

Point blank.

Your financial situation is your FIRST consideration.

Side note: Fuck those people who tell you to make the investment because the money will come back to you in spades if you believe it enough. Seriously, fuck those people.

Spend your money on good experts only when it’s in your budget.

Consider hiring a copywriter if …

Your website conversion rate is less than 2%.

Your conversion rate is how many people took the action you wanted them to take on any given page out of everyone who landed on that page. A general website conversion rate to aim for is 2–5%. Anything under 2% can indicate a couple of things:

  1. Your messaging is off

  2. You’re driving the wrong traffic to your website

A copywriter can diagnose and fix that for you.

Consider hiring a copywriter if …

You find it difficult to quickly and clearly say what you do and for whom.

If you cannot describe:

  • Your business

  • Your target audience

  • Your services

  • Your unique value

… you might benefit from a messaging workshop. Copywriters can do this.

A good copywriter wants specificity. They want to know exactly who your target audience is. What life situations are they in, what their vibe is, what their values are, what thoughts keep them up at night.

That is the exact kind of clarity that not only builds a kickass website, but will strengthen all of your marketing.

Consider hiring a copywriter if …

You’re pivoting.

If you’ve been in business for a while and you’re getting ready to pivot a little bit (or blow it up entirely — look at you go), you might want to talk with a copywriter.

A copywriter can internalize your new vision and make it work with your current presence. They’ll advise you on what to keep, what to ditch, and what to tweak.

And that messaging work we talked about earlier? It’s even more important when you’re in a transition.

Consider hiring a copywriter if …

You don’t love your website.

As entrepreneurs, we are our own cheerleaders.

We are our own source of motivation, direction, and income.

So … you should LOVE your website.

Think of it like your house, your car, your wardrobe. Your website is another thing that you cultivate that represents you.

If you don’t love it, your visitors might not either.

Copywriters not only help you get out of your own head for a little bit, but they’re really good at seeing what makes you cool, and they highlight that. After you work with an awesome copywriter, you’re gonna say things like:

“I could never put it into words, but this is exactly what I wanted.”

Consider hiring a copywriter if …

You have a designer in mind, or are aware you will need one.

Copywriters aren’t designers.

They have deep knowledge about design, and will provide wireframes to the designer so they know how to plot the copy.

But I don’t want you to expect copywriters to also design. (Just as you shouldn’t expect a web designer to also write.)

When it comes to your website, you’re going to need both a copywriter AND a web designer (or a web template that you can DIY).

(Pssst … most copywriters will have a list of designers they can refer you to!)

Your Copywriter Shopping List

If, after all of this, you’re like … “yeah, I might want a copywriter!” …

Go check out their websites. Reach out to them on social media. Strike up a conversation.

Don’t be afraid to get a feel of them and their vibe (and how nice they are to you!). You are totally allowed to shop around for copywriters and find the one you love.

✅ They clearly display their prices on their site — And those prices are in your budget.

✅ You actually like their website copy — Do you resonate with their vibe? You should.

✅ You can easily get to know them without reaching out — Are you able to get a grasp, through their website, blog, or social media profiles, of who they are and what they might be like to work with? You should.
